How do you collect enough data about your study participants without invading their privacy? The EPIC tutorial provides fundamental knowledge on enhancing the privacy and integrity of human subjects research at the point of study design. Individuals who currently engage in or aspire to involve human subjects in their research are encouraged to participate. We welcome individuals with varying levels of expertise, as we aim to engage diverse perspectives on research best practices and privacy concerns for human-centered AI studies. The tutorial consists of a series of interactive lectures, hands-on training, and guided discussions. Participants will receive hands-on training in how to determine sample size and collect participant demographics in a way that prioritizes data integrity, participant privacy, and sample representativeness. Participants will also discuss and troubleshoot the unique challenges to and opportunities for designing robust and ethical human-centered AI research.
